Our day in Cannes – Day 243 – May 3, 2026

Surprise surprise, I wake up early. So do the girls. I want to go for a walk, they want to stay in. They stay, and I go exploring. I don’t go for long, just a quick walk through the quiet streets of Old Town. I find the back of the beautiful large church at the plaza, back where the buildings are so tight, it’s hard to get a good picture.

Quiet streets and backs of churches (it’s the rounded one on the left).

I stop by the bakery on my way home, and grab another two of the tiny buns, and a couple of treats. I forget to take a picture once I set up the breakfast spread.

We’re heading to Cannes today! Joe keeps pronouncing it “cans” and I’m trying to get the girls to say “KANN” instead. We get ready for our last daytrip in France, and head on out.

Check out our narrow and crooked staircase!

This will be our last walk to the main train station, and once again we marvel at the below building. I showed you the side of it the other day, the one that said Music School and looks like it’s got three different styles/colour palettes, and today – you get the corner view!

Deceptionally narrow building, it looks so substantial from the side!

We hop on the train, this time travelling in the opposite direction from Monaco and Italy earlier in the week. And no, nobody washed the train windows either, it’s really hard to get a good photo.

That doesn’t stop me from trying, though!

We arrive in Cannes, and set out towards the Film Festival venue. The red carpet is rolled out and ready for us, but also for the hundreds of other tourists, eager to get their photo taken. We do not line up to wait.

Famous folks from all around the world will soon be here!
But we were here first! Kind of? Also – apparently it’s bright in Cannes too, hard to get a good photo when there’s so much squinting being done!

The front of the building looks impressive, but we walk around the side and find the hand prints instead. We take pictures of some of our favourite names, and if I were to show you all of them, I would have to add hundreds of photos and probably would have nothing else to write about.

Téa might not know them all yet, but one day she’ll know these names!
Like Sylvester Stallone’s giant hand print!

Inside the building, around the corner, there’s a visitor’s centre/souvenir shop. We browse and I really want to bring home a souvenir. The girls get pens, pencils, key chains and I pick up a magnet and a postcard. That’s about as much as we shop most places.

The blue chair that’s become a symbol of Cannes and the French Riviera.
The story behind the blue chair.

There’s also a photo wall, where visitors can pretend to be on the red carpet, to have the spotlight be on them. There’s also a photo station that actually takes your picture against this backdrop, and it emails the photo to your email address.

Téa loves to pose!
And now she has this from Cannes!
Maylin was less enthusiastic…

We reluctantly leave the film festival visitor’s centre, and we head out to explore the actual city of Cannes. We walk along the waterfront, but we are blocked from actually going to the harbour, there’s too many barriers and things going on. We google the film festival, and find out we’re only three weeks early! There’s a flea market as well, with lots of old pieces of art that would surely please someone with more money and more luggage space than us.

The next point on our agenda, is lunch. We’re still hunting for local specialties, and we end up going to one that promises I can finally try the famous daube. We sit down and are handed menus.

I did not order the cannibal platter.
Joe ordered a mixed platter with octopus, deep fried zucchini flowers and marinated peppers.
My daube was part of a three course menu, and the starter was a fish soup. Téa ordered a butter and basil pasta to share with her sister.

Then it kind of all fell apart. Maylin was given a smaller plate to eat some of each of our dishes, and we loaded her up with pasta. Then I put some of the cheese on her pasta (honestly, how could I??), and she refused to eat it. Flat out refused to eat anything further. We learned a lot this day, and no pictures were taken of my daube (beef stew with lots of flavour, over penne) or my dessert (warm chocolate cake with vanilla custard).

After lunch, we decided to head back towards Nice. A few steps away from the restaurant, we found this fun mural:

The girls said they saw Mickey and Minnie up there, but I had to take a picture to get a closer look before I could find them. Can you find them?
Towards the flea market area, I finally find the famous words: Liberté, égalité, fraternité – with a flag, no less!

We make our way back to the train station, and before we know it, we’re back in Nice. There’s a cookie vendor near the station that we hadn’t seen yet, and we pick up one each for us three girls, Joe will have a little bit of each.

I manage to snap a picture of the entrance to our building, kind of. This is the main “street” of Old Town, so we go up the stairs past the restaurant tables, three steps up to our right, and then immediately up the staircase on the left. Turn right, and you’re there!
Jojo, I like your cookies, but I’m not sure I love them. Clockwise from top: “Snickers” cookie, Kinderella cookie and apple pie cookie.

Joe is working away at the computer in the afternoon, and I want to go for a walk. I bring the girls with me this time, and we head out into Old Town again.

We found a new church! This one is so smooshed into other buildings, it’s actually impossible to get a good picture of it.
We found an overhang of Turkish “Evil Eye” protective charms.

After our little walk, our task was to pick up some food and bring dinner home. We found a corner vendor that sold a mix of all things local, and this is what we picked up:

Pissaladière. Yes, I meant to type s and not z. This is a fluffier bread base, and the traditional topping of caramelized onions and anchovies. Actually delicious!
The filled veggies are “petit farci”, and the zucchini I didn’t catch the name of, but was like a crustless quiche – quite delicious! The farci was too garlicky for me, and I couldn’t really handle the flavour.

We skipped on the local dessert of swiss chard and raisin pie. We have now tried ALMOST all the famous foods one “should try” while in Nice, and since tomorrow is our last day, I hope we find the rest then!
