A long walk, fish and markets! Day 103 – Dec 14, 2025

I will never get the same amount of steps in here in Hua Hin as I did in Japan or in Bangkok, it’s just too hot, and it’s making me sad. This morning, as we were sitting here blogging and doing other online work, Joe says “why don’t you go try out the treadmill in the gym?”. And so I did!

The gym is next to the kids’ pool, all the way at the end of the resort. The kids area has lots of water features, slides and squirting water in all directions, and is usually only turned on late afternoons (don’t ask me why!). This morning however, it’s on full blast as I walk by, and the walkway is soaked. I guess that’s how they want it!

The gym has two other occupants when I walk in, and I pick my treadmill. This was my view:

The displays worked off and on, but I managed to get a good walk in!

I tried watching a new-to-me movie, but didn’t really get into it, so switched to Legally Blonde. Always a great choice, with snappy comebacks and “you only look bad if you doubted me” kind of girl power.

After my little morning movie session, I was hot and sweaty and wanted to shower. Joe suggested we all go swimming first, so we went for a morning swim instead of our regular afternoon swim! I have to say, our pools in the sun are a lot warmer after a day full of sunshine! The pool we chose was mostly in the shade when we started, but soon had near full sunshine.

By lunchtime we were all done swimming, showering and ready to go! We took a Grab Taxi to Market Village, and I noticed they have a new sign up out front!

Happy New Year, 2026! Even though I’ve also learned that the Thai calendar goes by the Thai solar calendar, so it should be 2568!

We are hungry by this point, and so we head straight to the market area and buy some lunch.

Téa’s fried rice with Chinese sausage.
Joe’s chicken with fried garlic and rice

After a delicious market lunch, Joe suggested we go check out a place we’ve been curiously staring at every time we walk by… It’s a fish foot spa!! Maylin, Joe and I eagerly hop on and after a quick rub down of our feet with a wet cloth (lotions and bug sprays are not good for fish, apparently), we stick our feet into aquariums to become fish food for a bit!

As the little fish bite dead skin off our feet, it tickles something fierce!
He doesn’t giggle like this often, but you know he’s having fun when his eyes start to crinkle!

Téa is encouraged to try poking a finger into the aquarium, but they are way too scary for her to try. After 15 minutes of intense giggles from the three of us, with a squeal here and there when the bigger fish comes to take a chomp out of the sole of my foot, our feet emerge from the aquariums as smooth as baby bottoms! The lady recommends coming back twice a week for maximum softness.

After the fish, Joe takes the girls upstairs while I head across the aisle to get my toes done. First pedicure in Asia! Unfortunately, I didn’t know today was pedicure day when we left the Airbnb this morning, so when I realize, I ask Joe to bring me a pair of cheap flip flops. He and the girls then go sandal shopping and all three girls end up with new footwear.

After my pedicure, I locate my family on the top floor, back in the entertainment zone. The girls play air hockey and dance games, and then Téa rolls a ball to earn 200 tickets towards a prize! Once loaded up onto the game card, we’re done playing and heading for a snack.

Dance games are so fast! Great workout though!

We found a little vendor selling milk teas and pastries, and had a snack. Téa had a chocolate croissant and a chocolate milk, Joe had French Toast and iced coffee, I had an almond croissant and an iced green tea (read: not matcha) latte, and Maylin chose to share whatever everyone else was having.

We learned things today. Téa will choose one chocolate item at a time, toast means French Toast, and green tea does not mean matcha, even in a latte.

We contemplated going home with our bags before heading out to the Tamarind market for dinner, but ended up taking a Grab taxi straight there from Village Market. As usual when we eat at markets, I take the kids to get their food first, while Joe holds down the table. We are usually there early enough for there not to be long lines, but it still takes time to pick what we want and for each vendor to prepare our dishes.

By the time I make it back to the table with Téa, Joe is off buying us some food. I had been curious to try the dry fried pork with sticky rice, and it’s waiting for me at the table. It was a disappointment, but now I know! Then Joe returns with a spicy and saucy curry that was a little too fiery. We can’t just sail through life loving allllll the dishes either! Maylin loved her hot dog from the same vendor as last time, and Téa had French Fries with a bacon topping.

The sauce is good, but not with this chewy meat…
Tamarind market is our favourite, just look at the cute jelly fish lanterns! Notice how some tables are more permanent than others?

When it gets properly dark and the bugs start coming out, we head back to the Airbnb. After all, it was last Sunday I got bitten, and because we came straight from the mall, I have no bug repellent on… There are some risks not worth taking! So home to a family movie night it is!
