Smallest and largest, all in one day! Day 104 – Dec 15, 2025

Mondays are for social studies. I quickly set up their calendars for the week, realizing Maylin can finish three of her Grade 1 subjects before the end of the year. We’ll follow the GECDSB calendar and take a break starting this Friday. Even though really, every day feels like a vacation?

After schoolwork, Joe needs to go back Market Village. The man loves his malls! But it’s also an air conditioned space with clean, working washrooms, so I’m not one to complain.

The first thing Maylin wants to do, is to pose in a sleigh.

Yesterday, the girls and I were looking at the menu photos outside a fast food chain we’d never tried before, and we jokingly suggested to Joe that he could go eat ramen next door while the girls and I tested out Chester’s for lunch. Joe would hear none of that, so we all sat down and ordered food. Téa asked for mac & cheese, Maylin wanted a hot dog (what is this, hotdog number three in three days?), Joe ordered fish and chips, while I opted for a spicy papaya salad on top of crispy sea bass with rice.

Yummy, but where’s the rest? This must be the world’s smallest portion!

When the food came, the mac & cheese portion was so tiny! Same with the hot dog, and both girls ended up buying another side dish. This time, Maylin had the mac & cheese, and Téa ordered chicken nuggets. Oh and by the way, when Thai people call something spicy, believe them! The salad was borderline too spicy, but overall delicious, especially for being a fast food!

A rare photo of Joe drinking Coke, as it was the only beverage available for Chester’s combo deals.

One of the things I’ve noticed in Thailand, is that their Coca-Cola does not taste like what I’m used to. I’m not saying it’s like North American Coke vs Mexican Coke, as that’s hardly noticeable. In Thailand, most beverages have artificial sweetener added to cut down on sugar, so even Coca-Cola tastes like the diet version.

After lunch we roam around the mall looking for a couple of things for the upcoming week. Téa has been needing a protractor for her math homework, but because we only remember when she’s sitting at the table doing math, we haven’t gotten one yet. Until today! We love browsing the stationary store, but don’t often buy anything. Today’s grand purchase costs 13THB, or $0.57CA.

Another one of the things we’re looking at today, is a sun hat for each of us. This is the one I tried on, and did not buy:

But really, I could pull this off, right?

After roaming around for a bit, we go to the grocery store and then head home. Down at the pools, it’s getting super busy. There are multiple families in each pool, and we’d gotten so used to having our choice of empty pools! I know, we’d been spoiled rotten, and here comes reality.

After swimming and showers, we snack on the world’s biggest grapes:

The last time we bought grapes back in Japan, they ended up being super expensive and very disappointing. These however, were sweet and seedless and absolutely perfect!

Joe makes a quick and simple dinner at home, and then we break out the playing cards. I teach the others a new game, one I grew up playing in groups of three and up, sometimes as many as 8-10! Joe and Maylin team up, and they win every round. After all, four eyes are better than two? Next time, Maylin’ll be on MY team!

Card night!
