You can paint where you climb – Day 140 – Jan 20, 2026

Joe went out for a walk again this morning, so when I wake up, there’s street food breakfast to be had!

These little discs are eggy little pancakes, but they taste like there might be some rice flour mixed in? They taste like more than just egg. Delicious, especially when you add the spicy mango strips and dip them in the sauce!

The girls struggle with motivation as they complete their math and English tasks for the morning. When we’re all done, we eat whatever foods we can scrape together and call lunch (I finished up my yogurt with some cereal), and then, only then, do we head out for the day.

Our destination this afternoon is the climbing café from last week. The girls run straight for the climbing walls, and Joe and I sit down for our excellent coconut coffees. I haven’t had a coconut coffee done this way anywhere else, so I’m always disappointed when I request them. Climbing café does it best!

Today, the coffees come in flimsy plastic cups, which doesn’t feel right. Thank goodness the recipe is still the same!

The girls are loving this climbing experience. Maylin tries to climb an especially challenging outcropping and takes a fall, which means it’s time to switch activities. Téa, our creative mind, has been wanting to paint here since we first discovered this place, but her sister has never wanted to join her. Until today! Both girls pick a capybara figurine, and sit down with paints and brushes.

Téa putting the finishing touches on her creation.
Maylin requested another selfie. Why, of course!

At this point, I leave the others at the café and head home. I am being interviewed by a lady doing research about how we aquire languages, as she is writing a book! It’s a topic I have a lot of experience with and opinions on, as I wrote my university dissertation on a similar topic. I practically skip all the way home to chat with a stranger for an hour, because would you believe it? Speaking with someone other than my nearest and dearest family members has become a rare treat! The interviewer is in Germany, so the time difference lends itself to a mid afternoon chat.

While I’m on my call, Joe and the girls come home. Their creations are now dry and ready for display!

If you haven’t heard the capybara song, maybe keep it that way. It’s an ear worm of the worst sort!

Joe is not feeling great. When Joe doesn’t feel great, there’s only one thing that can soothe his soul, so he sends Téa and I out to get dinner for the evening.

Beef pho from Pappa Roti for Joe. It’s like medicine and a warm hug, all in a bowl of food!
If this girl could have it her way, she would turn into a beef and corn steamed bun. It’s all she’ll ask for, at least at our current location!
Téa is a creature of comfort, and picks a chicken cheese sandwich. The girls split the fries.
I can not resist the smell of pizza dough baking, and this pizza place bakes sandwich buns out of pizza dough. How genius! Why have I not been doing this myself?? Definitely something I’ll recreate once we get back home! Once cooked and sliced, I requested thick slices of fresh mozzarella, tomato and slices of warm beef, but there was no way to make it photogenic. I’m not a fan of slicing sandwiches in half, I like mine whole, thank you very much!

The girls and I leave Joe to feel better, and head out for another late night walk. It’s not really late night, it just looks like it. Anything after 6pm looks this dark. Dusk starts at 5pm, and then BAM it’s pitch black.

The last families are packing up from their day at the beach, so the poor sun lounger man hasn’t been able to go home yet. That’s more than 12 hours in a work day! All his loungers are up and ready by 6am.
I think they’re treating it as a playground, but it’s also very efficient in letting them burn off some energy. That, and they love running on the paths, being careful not to bump into people or pets, and not get run over by motorbikes, because yes, there ain’t nowhere not suitable for a motorbike, apparently.
Even Mom got to try this one today! Fun stuff, and definitely not as light and easy as the girls make it seem, although I may have a bit more weight to lift than they do?
It’s a beautiful sight, but not matter what I tried, I couldn’t get my camera not to add reflections in the sky. No UFOs in sight, sorry.

Once back up, we hunker down to watch a movie with the girls, and once again it takes them a good hour to settle down in bed. My evenings are not getting any shorter, and I finally crawl into my own bed around 11.30pm. One day, one GLORIOUS day, they may agree to putting themselves to bed, instead of fighting their way into sleep…
